Called to Love
"There are different gifts, but it is the same Spirit who gives them. There are different ways of serving God, but it is the same God who is served. Each one is given a gift by the One Spirit, to use for the common good. Together we are the Body of Christ, and individually members with one another."
These words are traditionally spoken at Installation services for pastors who commit to a call within a particular congregation. They were spoken at my Installation here at Flemingsburg Christian Church on March 24, 2019. What a special day that was for me and, I hope, for you, the Body of Christ. An Installation feels a lot like a wedding, with it's liturgy and covenant. And, in many ways, it is. We have promised to one another to love and serve in ministry, to teach the Good News of Jesus Christ and His saving grace, not only to one another, but to the world and to all who will listen. This is a full commitment we have made to one another to be a Disciple of Christ, one of His followers.
Each of these gifts with which we are endowed determines how we will serve God and our church. Some are given the gifts of teaching or preaching, prophesying or speaking in tongues, or interpreting tongues, healing the sick, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and loving the other. Some are given gifts of leadership and others are given the gifts of working well with groups of people. Some are called into the spiritual disciplines of prayer and study. Others are called into the physical disciplines of hard labor. Each of us plays an integral part in how we show our love for Christ in this world. The work of the church that we chose to engage in takes our gifts and uses them for the building of God's Kingdom here on earth.
It is time, once again, for the church to chose officers who will faithfully take on the challenges of the church's work in the coming year. Please prayerfully consider how you might serve the church, whether you are elected as an official officer or as an integral part of the Body of Christ. We are all in this together and all the work that we do on behalf of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ is important work, no matter where you are called to serve.
